FBI On ANTIFA Involvement In Violence: ‘No Intel Indicating Antifa Involvement’

According to the Washington field office of the FBI, it  “has no intelligence indicating Antifa involvement/presence” in regards to violence that took place during protests in D.C. on Sunday. Many on the right believe ANTIFA has been responsible for the violence taking place during the George Floyd protests around the country. This includes President Trump who wants to label ANTIFA as a terrorist organization.

Trump made the announcement on the same day as the FBI released its findings. Many point out that not only does the government not have the authority to label a domestic group a terrorist group, but ANTIFA isn’t even an actual group. ANTIFA, or anti-fascist, does not have a membership nor a way to join. This alarms many because it means labeling them a terrorist organization opens the door to labeling just about anyone a terrorist if they protest against the government.

After the President’s announcement on Twitter, Attorney General Bill Barr said, “The violence instigated and carried out by Antifa and other similar groups in connection with the rioting is domestic terrorism and will be treated accordingly.” Barr made the statement despite the FBI stating many times over the years that white nationalist and white supremacist groups are their top priority when it comes to domestic terrorism.

An FBI report further states about ANTIFA, “based on CHS [Confidential Human Source] canvassing, open-source/social media partner engagement, and liaison, the FBI field office has no intelligence indicating Antifa involvement/presence.”  The report explains that backpacks with explosives have been found and bricks were thrown at police vehicles but none of these events involved ANTIFA.

Despite right-wing fears about ANTIFA its seems that in the eyes of the FBI beliefs about the group may have been greatly exaggerated.
