FBI, CISA, Warn Of Foreign Actors, Cybercriminals Attempting To Discredit Election; President Tries To Discredit Election
On the same day that the FBI and CISA released a notice warning the public that, especially since all ballots may not be counted on November 3rd, cybercriminals and foreign actors could try to discredit the results of the election, President Donald Trump spoke to reporters, saying that the results of the election cannot be trusted.
The FBI and CISA have warned that criminals or enemies of the U.S. could try to harm the electoral process through the spread of disinformation. In a release through the Internet Crime Complaint Center, the Federal agencies warned:
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) are issuing this announcement to raise awareness of the potential threat posed by attempts to spread disinformation regarding the results of the 2020 elections. Foreign actors and cybercriminals could create new websites, change existing websites, and create or share corresponding social media content to spread false information in an attempt to discredit the electoral process and undermine confidence in U.S. democratic institutions.
The release goes on to detail that it typically can take days or even weeks for local and state officials to certify all votes, but that with the increased number of mailed ballots this year, there could potentially be additional delays. This might encourage opportunists to “exploit the time required to certify and announce elections’ results by disseminating disinformation that includes reports of voter suppression, cyberattacks targeting election infrastructure, voter or ballot fraud, and other problems intended to convince the public of the elections’ illegitimacy.”
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump told reporters that it’s important to get a Justice seated on the Supreme Court to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg before the election, because “What they’re doing is a hoax with the ballots….and you’re going to need to have nine Justices.”

Trump has said previously that we may never know the real outcome of the election, and has insisted that mailed ballots will raise the risk of fraudulently cast votes, and as recently as last month claimed that Democrats are trying to use COVID-19 to ‘steal’ the election.
