Failed Gotcha Interview With AOC’s Mother, Finds Proud Parent Instead
British tabloids like the Daily Mail are experts in extracting embarrassing quotes from the family members of celebrities. Reporter, Jose Lambiet, was thinking he may be able to get some good quotes from the mother of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
What he got instead, were glowing anecdotes from an impossibly proud parent. Blanca Ocasio-Cortez told Lambiet the story of her family as she baked a lasagna for a relative.
Blanca spoke of AOC’s upbringing, “The family enjoyed a middle-class lifestyle until Sergio died of lung cancer in 2008 but fell into serious debt when he left unpaid medical bills and no life insurance to cover them. Blanca worked two jobs, including one as a housekeeper, to save their house.”
There was also this touching story where Sergio encouraged Alexandria, “Shortly before Sergio died, when he could no longer speak, he and Alexandria were sitting together watching an episode of Star Trek: Voyager. At one point, Sergio pointed to Capt. Janeway and then at Alexandria, as if to suggest she, too, would be “someone in charge” someday. Later, the actress who played Janeway, Kate Mulgrew, made an appearance at one of Alexandria’s campaign rallies.”
Blanca’s general amazement of her daughter’s accomplishments are present through the entire interview. She finds her daughter’s political career to be “surreal.” The only line that ended up being remotely controversial was this one, “‘I was paying $10,000 a year in real estate taxes up north. I’m paying $600 a year in Florida. It’s stress-free down here.”
Conservatives seized on this line. Fox News posted an article making it out to be a critique of New York’s livability, then took shots at her daughter.
