Republicans, especially in the Fox News era, regularly practice performative patriotism. The idea behind this is that they love America more than anyone else, and therefore should decide what’s best for the country. They want to Make America Great Again, they just don’t want to take every American along for the ride.
Donald Trump and the members of his family are experts in performative patriotism. Eric Trump gave a master class in performative patriotism during a recent Conservative event.
The former President’s son told attendees:
“I’ve got a little 4-year-old Luke. And he comes home from school and we say prayers every night together. We have these little 3 family prayers we say. The Lord’s Prayer and two others. But I always make him stand up, put his hand on his heart, and say the Pledge of Allegiance. In NY, they would’ve taught him the Antifa code of destruction. They’re not doing the Pledge of Allegiance in NY.”
Trump then asked, “Why is it that we have this war on the flag and the red, white, and blue? Why is it that we have this war on the Pledge of Allegiance? Why is it that we have people tearing down these statues of our historical figures? Why is it that they want to rewrite the governing documents of this country? They’re trying to change history.”
