Five people lost their lives during former President Donald Trump’s insurrection at the United States Capitol on January 6th. Millions of people watched on live television as hundreds of rabid Trump supporters invaded the complex with the objective of overthrowing the federal government and executing members of Congress and then-Vice President Mike Pence. But the right-wing cult of Trump’s “Big Lie” is still insisting that nothing of note occurred on January 6th and that the House of Representatives’ Select Committee to investigate the siege is illegitimate and “unacceptable.”
On Tuesday, while United States Capitol Police officers who survived the attack shared their testimony with lawmakers and the world, conservative commentator Eric Metaxas appeared on the propaganda outlet Real America’s Voice and insisted that “we are at war” and that there was no insurrection.
“So whatever happened on January 6th, let me just be clear. Everybody wants to know what happened. We know that whatever happened wasn’t what we’re being told happened. The idea of that, Steve, that in the United States of America, there could be this false narrative put out by bureaucrats and by the government, every America should understand: We are at war. It is unacceptable in the United States of America to have this thing going on,” Metaxas said, referring to Tuesday’s select committee opening hearing.
“It’s one thing if it’s going on with the Warren Commission or Watergate. This is something that strikes at the heart of everything at the heart of this nation. The lie that there was some insurrection – if there was an insurrection, somebody’s brains would have been on the floor of the Capitol. This is absolute baloney,” he said.
