Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren announced she is forming an exploratory committee ahead of an expected campaign for the Democratic nomination in the 2020 presidential race.
Warren is the first Democrat of national stature to take formal action toward a likely run for the presidency.
The progressive star made the announcement via a four-and-half minute video in which she said, “Corruption is poisoning our democracy.”
“Politicians look the other way while big insurance companies deny patients life-saving coverage, while big banks rip off consumers and while big oil companies destroy this planet,” she said.
Warren also addressed racial inequality in the video by noting that “families of color face a path that is steeper and rockier, a path made even harder by the impact of generations of discrimination.”
She also addressed working-class and middle-class voters when she told Bloomberg, “I’m in this fight for hard-working families. And that means reducing the student loan debt burden, increasing our Social Security payments for those who depend most on it, & the overarching piece, reducing corruption in government.”
By forming an exploratory committee, Warren can start raising money for the 2020 presidential race.
Mary Anne Marsh, a Democratic consultant based in Boston, supports Warren’s anticipated run for the White House.
“The country will realize that after trying every kind of guy, it’s time to let a woman clean up the mess,” she said.
