Elise Stefanik Gives Trump The Only Thing He Really Wants: The Credit

Elise Stefanik was confirmed to her House GOP Conference Chair position Friday morning. Her short speech following her confirmation focused almost entirely on the former president.

Three clips below via The Recount and CSPAN show the progression of Stefanik’s speech: first, she credits Donald Trump for endorsing her for this position, then she praises Trump and emphasizes his importance, before turning to attack the people Trump likes to attack: President Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Since at least January, one of the central issues for the Republican Party has been whether or not Donald Trump is still the face of the party. While a handful of elected officials, such as Liz Cheney, who was just ousted from the very position Stefanik was confirmed to, and Adam Kinzinger, have called for the party to move on, hold Trump accountable, and recenter their party, for others, like Stefanik, clearly benefit from continuing to support him.

Donald Trump endorsed Stefanik for the position Thursday evening, posting to his blog to recommend her over Chip Roy (R-TX).

As reported by Texas Monthly at the time, Chip Roy put his future with the Republican Party — and Trump — on rocky ground in January, when even before the attack on the Capitol Building, he planned a speech for that day calling for Trump fans to stop fighting the outcome of the election and spreading Trump’s Big Lie. Once the attack took place, he added in a call for rioters to face consequences — and a scolding for the then-president, for convincing his followers that Congress, or Mike Pence, had the power to overturn the election.

Trump’s long-term influence in the Republican Party continues to be debated, but in the current moment, giving him all of the credit and none of the blame still seems to be a functional strategy for success within the party.
