Dr. Fauci: We Aren’t Winning Against This Virus
Dr. Anthony Fauci, speaking to a webinar on pandemic response, said that the coronavirus is “almost your perfect storm,” and a nightmare for infectious disease experts. Asked to compare the pandemic to a baseball game and describe the current situation, he responded, “We’re not winning.”
According to Newsweek, Dr. Fauci told the panel, “Certainly we are not winning the game right now. We are not leading it.” He said that it’s especially concerning that in the middle of a historic pandemic outbreak, the rush to reopen the economy has resulted in a resurgence of cases. He said it’s necessary to find ways to reopen without surges in cases.
As for the future, Fauci says it’s unlikely this virus will just go away, but it can be controlled with vaccination and public health measures.
According to ABC, Fauci is slated to testify before congress at the end of this month, along with CDC Prevention Director Dr. Robert Redfield, and Admiral Brett Giroi from DHHS. It’s expected that the experts will be asked to advise on a national plan to combat COVID-19.
Dr. Fauci has reportedly been stifled, neither allowed to brief the president nor to go directly to the public with information via news and other media, after contradicting Donald Trump on the severity and outlook for the pandemic.
However, Trump himself recently announced a resumption of daily coronavirus briefings, after in-person rallies didn’t work out well and his advisor, Kellyanne Conway, declared that his polling was better when he was making these daily appearances.
