In a Thursday interview, Dr. Anthony Fauci spoke about the pandemic, social distancing, vaccines, and the difference between fighting this in developed and developing nations. Explaining how health concerns are a global issue, he warns that if wealthier nations create vaccines, but don’t help fight the disease in other nations, it will only come back. He also warned that it’s not yet time to ease restrictions too far.
‘Pass The Mic,’ a project by ONE, has celebrities talking with experts, helping bring their message to the public. On Thursday, actress Julia Roberts interviewed Dr. Fauci about the pandemic, the global effect, and his own experience.
Physical separation has worked, but not completely…It isn’t like everything is dramatically going down. New York got hit very badly, but they’re starting to come down now. Now is not the time to tempt fate and pull back completely, there is a golden mean there. You don’t want to stay locked down forever.
Roberts asked, “Don’t you think what might help us as a society is accepting the fact that normal is never gonna be exactly what it once was?”
People say do you think we’ll be back to normal this summer and I say, you know, I don’t really think so, because you know, it may be the new normal but it’s not gonna be the way we had before.
Fauci said that the new normal has to be recognizing that we are all vulnerable to events like this. Discussing vaccines and other interventions, he reiterated that a fight like this one really has to be a global effort, because if the virus is attacked only in the wealthiest nations, it will be back.
