Donald Trump’s VP Mike Pence Throws Support Behind Brian Kemp — Who Trump Is Desperate To Unseat

Donald Trump wants Brian Kemp out as Governor of Georgia. He’s consistently claimed — falsely — that he won the 2020 election in Georgia, and he’s blaming that state’s officials, including Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, for not altering reality to match his lies. Now, his own Vice President is going in the opposite direction, throwing his support behind the very incumbent Trump wants so badly to unseat.

Kemp’s communications director made the announcement Friday, saying that former Vice President Mike Pence would be appearing at an event the night before the primary election, where he would rally alongside Kemp to get out the vote for the primary.

Trump has not yet responded to this, but his past statements, released on social media through his spokesperson Liz Harrington, demonstrate how much ire he still holds for Kemp. In fact, only two days ago, he released a statement attacking Kemp for “load[ing] up the great state of Georgia with RINOS” — listing a number of Republicans who had shown support for Kemp despite Trump.

Of course, if Trump adds Pence to the list, it will hardly be his first attack on his own Vice President. It could be argued to follow fairly naturally, in fact, from his tweets accusing Pence of lacking courage to put Trump’s bidding over his own legal duty, while an angry pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol Building threatening Pence’s life.

Still, it’s being widely read as an open defiance of the former president’s hold on the Republican Party, and it’s unlikely he’ll be pleased.
