Donald Trump Turns On Kevin McCarthy Over January 6th Hearings

Donald Trump has made his feelings about the House Select Committee convened to investigate the events of January 6th very clear: he’s not happy. He calls them the “unselect” committee, complains that he’s not given “equal time” for election conspiracy stories, and rants and raves about the hearings not presenting his “side.” Now it seems he’s picked someone new to blame for it all.

Of course, Trump has lashed out at several specific members of the Committee, and is supporting a primary challenger to Liz Cheney (R-WY) in part over her role in the panel, but it seems he holds another Republican responsible now too.

Almost a year ago, as the panel was convening, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was invited to seat five Republicans on the Committee. He selected Kelly Armstrong (R-ND), Rodney Davis (R-Ill), Troy Nehls (R-TX), Jim Banks (R-IN) and Jim Jordan (R-OH). However, when Banks and Jordan were rejected, he withdrew all five names, potentially setting the panel up for challenges, as it would not be bipartisan.

Fortunately, two Republicans were willing to serve — the aforementioned Cheney, and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL). Still, Trump doesn’t seem to acknowledge those two individuals as Republicans, and according to Punchbowl News‘ Jake Sherman, Trump ;washed out at McCarthy this week, saying he should have insisted on placing Republicans on the panel to add the “opposing point of view.”

He reportedly told Sherman in an interview that Jim Banks and Jim Jordan should have been seated, but that when they were rejected, McCarthy should have picked other Republicans to replace them. (Jordan has been subpoenaed by the committee, and according to CNN, Banks has had to be scolded for falsely identifying himself as the ranking member of the committee, after being rejected from it, in communications with at least one government agency.)

Trump also posted to his Truth Social page Wednesday morning, echoing the sentiments he shared with Sherman, albeit leaving McCarthy’s name out of it.

“Such tremendous lies and innuendo took place yesterday at the Unselect Committee on January 6th. They don’t want the facts of the Election, or discussions of the Security Breach by Pelosi and the Dems, they only want to continue the Greatest Witch Hunt in our Country’s history. You will never get the truth when you have biased and hateful witnesses who are allowed to go on and on without even the slightest cross examination[sic]. Republicans should be allowed representation!!!”
