Donald Trump Threatens To Defund School Systems And Universities Deemed Too Liberal

In tweets Friday, President Donald Trump declared that he would have funding removed from schools and universities for their left-leaning teachings. At the same time, he threatened to pull funding from schools that elect to have distance-learning courses rather than pack students back into a classroom during a pandemic.

Earlier this week, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos insisted that public schools must reopen in the fall, and have full-time, in-person classes, rather than offering distance learning or splitting students into shifts for the purpose of social distancing. Trump doubled down on this Friday, tweeting to say schools that don’t reopen for on-campus courses won’t receive federal funding.

A few hours later, Trump returned to the subject to criticise “too many universities and school systems” as purveyors of “liberal indoctrination” rather than education.

Calling this an act against public policy, and decrying it as pushing propaganda, the president said that the treasury department would re-examine the tax-exempt status of such schools, and possibly take away Federal funding.

Meanwhile, as Mother Jones reports, the Trump administration and Betsy DeVos are working to direct public funding to voucher programs, which would divert taxpayer money to fund religious schools, whose boards are free to choose a curriculum that directly defies our best science on evolution and the history of the Earth, among other topics. Though Trump is directing his ire and threats at what he deems to be liberal education (without offering any description of what exactly he considers that to be), his administration is fighting to allow public funding of false information to our youngest schoolchildren.
