President Donald Trump went out of his way in Quebec to trash our allies in NATO. According to the document, during the G7 meeting, the President said NATO was as “bad as NAFTA.”
The transcript, obtained by Axios’ Jonathan Swan, speaks to an unhinged Donald Trump ranting about the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) during talks with other world leaders
“NATO is as bad as NAFTA,” the president said. “It’s much too costly for the U.S.”
Swan notes that Trump’s rant “reinforced some of the Europeans’ worst fears that he’ll take a purely transactional approach” during next month’s NATO summit”
Ending the NATO alliance has been a top-level goal of Russian President Vladimir Putin, a man who allowed, and possibly issued, the mandate for his government to meddle in the 2016 U.S. election and whom Trump has called a “strong” leader.
Trump in the meantime says he believes Russia was being “sincere” when claiming they didn’t meddle in the U.S. election. Trump continues to maintain that stance even after a partisan report from the GOP issued by Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee this year concluded that Russia did directly interfere.
The 45th POTUS is also preparing to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in mid-July, likely right after he attends the NATO meeting in Brussels, Belgium. That meeting is likely to draw criticism from NATO leaders who have been attempting to isolate Putin because of his country’s numerous attempts to destabilize various regions surrounding Russia.
Trump has made it clear he would rather speak to ruthless dictators than his allies. Following the G7 summit in which he debased France, Canada, and other partners, Trump flew to Singapore where he met with Kim Jong Un. Following that meeting, Trump praised North Koreas leader on numerous occasions.
