Teen Vogue, despite having teen in the title, has produced some truly excellent journalism over the last couple of years. Some of this writing really drew to ire of Conservatives and the alt-right. Writer Lauren Duca engaged in a memorable feud with “Pharma-bro” Martin Shkreli for which the investor was suspended from Twitter.
The magazine recently published another provocative article, this one concerning sex workers. The President’s son, Donald Trump Jr., was quick to attack the article and its potential effect on teens.
The writer of the piece, Dr. Tlaleng Mofokeng, was attempting to enlighten the audience about the reality of sex work. The Doctor also argued that sex workers are entitled to the same protections as workers in other fields. Dr. Mofokeng argued, “I am a doctor, an expert in sexual health, but when you think about it, aren’t I a sex worker? And in some ways, aren’t we all?”
The piece led Donald Trump Jr. to tweet, “This is how deranged the left is. Imagine trying to normalize this to a teen and even preteen audience!?! Maybe start with STEM before jumping to prostitution as a career choice for our young women. Nothing is sacred to these sickos and they’re influencing our youth.”

While Trump Jr. made reference to teens, the article was meant to be informational and made no attempt to influence teens towards a career in the sex trade. According to Dr. Mofokeng, “these types of professionals not only offer sexual release to their clients but also ‘human connection, friendship, and emotional support.’”
