Donald Trump Doubles Down On ‘Vote Twice’ Advice In Tweets

In a series of tweets Thursday morning, President Donald Trump doubled down on prior advice to cast a ballot by mail, and a second one in person. This is illegal.

Speaking in North Carolina, the president declared that anyone who received a ballot in the mail should fill it out, then show up in person to vote, too. He suggested that the voter find out if the mailed vote had been counted yet, and if not, vote again.

In the process, the president admitted that there are processes already in place to prevent one individual having two votes counted, saying that if the mailed ballot showed up after the in-person vote, it would just not be counted.

And then if they tabulate it very late, which they shouldn’t be doing, they’ll see you voted, and so it won’t count.

What the president didn’t mention is that charges for voter fraud could be filed at that point, even though the second vote wouldn’t be counted in the presidential election.

In a series of tweets Thursday morning, the president doubled down and reiterated this viewpoint.

The president’s surrogates have been asked about this. Attorney General Bill Barr claimed in an interview not to be sure whether this would be illegal or not.

Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany also defended the president’s directive, saying that he was just trying to get people to verify that their vote was counted.

It remains illegal to vote more than once in an election. As the National Conference of State Legislatures explains, there’s no guarantee that absentee ballots will be counted by election day. In some states, counting of these votes is not permitted until the polls close. This does not mean those votes aren’t counted.
