Congressman Devin Nunes (R-CA) insisted on Sunday that COVID-19 originated in a Chinese lab and that President Joe Biden is hiding the truth about the origin of the coronavirus from the American people.
Nunes, the House Intelligence Committee co-chair, sent a letter to Biden over the weekend demanding answers to questions that some lawmakers and scientists still have over how SARS-COV-2 managed to jump from bats to humans so quickly. So far, there is no proof that COVID-19 escaped a Chinese lab.
“I request your Administration’s support for a whole-of-government effort to identify the origins of COVID-19 and urge you to undertake a review of the interagency processes associated with the funding of dangerous dual-use research—particularly when conducted with foreign adversary nations,” Nunes wrote.
Nunes also sent a letter to Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines.
Nunes peddled the controversial and unverified conspiracy theory during an interview on Sunday Morning Futures with Fox Business propagandist Maria Bartiromo:
Well look, you played the comment of Senator [Tom] Cotton [R-AR] from a year ago. Here we are and we don’t have answers. If you look at the evidence it’s pretty clear that there wasn’t some guy in wet market that ate a bat. It likely didn’t come from there. There’s zero evidence of that. But there’s building circumstantial evidence that, indeed, this did come from a lab and money flowed from the U.S. Government through nonprofits that was actually supporting this type of research that was going on in China. And, look, why is this important?
This is about bioweapons. This is about biowarfare. This is very concerning. I think what Senator Rand Paul [R-KY] was — was getting to is this really something that the U.S. Wants to be involved in and moving forward from here. We have to know the answers to this sooner rather than later and the Biden administration needs to get to the bottom of it.
I think they are sitting on and suppressing a lot of intelligence that the American people should see in order to know how to move ahead over the coming next few years as China continues to gain control of the life science arena and life-science global economy. They’re trying to move all this technology back to China while at the same time not answering basic questions about the origin of this virus.
Nunes added that his letters contain “25 questions that the United States government ought to be answering – not just for the Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee who are trying to get to the bottom of this – but for all of the American people and all of our American allies around the globe.”
