Democrats Demand McCarthy Reign In Marjorie Taylor Greene
House Democrats, saying that her behavior “could lead to violence against members of Congress,” have written to Minority Kevin McCarthy demanding that he take immediate action to reign in Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).
While the Republican freshman’s behavior has been confrontational, threatening and disruptive since she arrived on Capitol Hill the group of nearly 40 Democratic lawmakers took the step of writing to McCarthy after Greene’s comments during her warmup act for former president Donald Trump’s Ohio rally last weekend.
Without evidence – because there is none – Greene repeatedly told the crowd that twice-impeached Trump won the 2020 election and viciously attacked Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) Greene called AOC a “little communist from New York City” and grinned and nodded in agreement with the crowd when it began a “lock her up” chant.
The letter to McCarthy cites a number of incidents over the past six months in which Greene has deliberately antagonized fellow lawmakers, including when she posted an anti-transgender sign outside of her office, which is directly across the hall from another member of Congress who she knows has a transgender child.
“Rep. Greene’s conduct does not comport with what we expect from a member of the House of Representatives,” the letter reads. “Moreover, we are extremely concerned that her conduct is creating an unsafe work environment for members, and that her actions could lead to violence against members of Congress.”
In the letter, Democrats reminded McCarthy of his pledge in February to get Greene to change her behavior. They noted that since then the California Republican has taken no disciplinary action in the wake of some of Greene’s most egregious statements, including when she compared the requirement to wear a mask on the House floor to the Holocaust.
