Dem. Sen. Whitehouse Wants to Suspend Trial to Figure Out if Trump Lawyer Lied in Court

The Donald Trump impeachment trial has been quite wild all week. Friday, though, may have been the wildest day yet. Shortly after the days proceedings were over, a report surfaced about a phone call Senate Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy had with Donald Trump. And the source of the information was Republican Congresswoman Jaime Herrerra Beutler.

There is also another phone call that it causing controversy in the trial. This was a conversation between Donald Trump and Tommy Tuberville. The Alabama senator has stated that he ended the call, which took place during the insurrection, when Mike Pence was being evacuated for safety.

On Friday, though, Trump lawyer Michael van der Veen claimed that Trump didn’t know Pence was in danger during the siege. Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse is now calling on the trial to be stopped to figure out if van der Veen was lying.

Whitehouse tweeted, “Trump’s lawyers are likely under ethics obligation to clean this up: duty of candor to a tribunal. You don’t get as counsel to make misrepresentations; if you do, you have an affirmative duty to clean it up. Tomorrow just got a lot more interesting.”

The senator continued, “One way to clear it up? Suspend trial to depose McCarthy and Tuberville under oath and get facts. Ask Secret Service to produce for review comms back to White House re VP Pence safety during siege. What did Trump know, and when did he know it?”
