The Kennedy Centers began all the way back in 1978. Since then, it has been a tradition for the sitting president to honor renowned figures in the arts and sit in the audience.
The tradition, however, stopped during the presidency of Donald Trump. A number of the honorees noted that they would not attend the event if Trump was in attendance. So the former president and first lady skipped the event while he occupied the White House.
This year, the Biden’s have opted to appear at the event with the honorees. And during the open of the show, David Letterman wasted no time ripping into the former president.
“Tonight, it is quite nice, very nice, to see the presidential box once again being occupied,” the former late night show host quipped. “The same with the Oval Office.”
Biden, himself, wasn’t immune to jokes. Saturday Night Live’s Michael Che cracked, “It’s a bit intimidating to do jokes in front of President Joe Biden. C’mon there’s no way he’s still awake right now.” The camera panned to the president laughing.
The Kennedy Center Honors will officially air on December 22nd on CBS.
