Dan Crenshaw and AOC Engage in a Gun Control Feud

Since they were both elected to congress in the fall of 2018, Texas’ Dan Crenshaw and New York’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have been prominent representatives. And the duo have had memorable exchanges in the past. In April of this year, AOC ripped Crenshaw for failing to support the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund.

This week, the congresspeople engaged in another lively Twitter debate, this time over gun control. The spat began when Crenshaw claimed that he sometimes lent out his guns and Ocasio-Cortez was incredulous over his reasoning.

The Texas congressman shared a story about a woman using a gun for protection when she was assailed by criminals and connected it to gun rights. He wrote, “Situations like this story are why we protect the 2nd Amendment. Side note: With universal background checks, I wouldn’t be able to let my friends borrow my handgun when they travel alone like this. We would make felons out of people just for defending themselves.”

Ocasio-Cortez responded by wondering why he would lend guns to people who haven’t passed a criminal background check. Crenshaw responded with a tweet insulting New York, “Just so I’m clear: you think my friends are domestic abusers/criminals? Seriously that’s your argument? That they can’t pass a background check? Wrong. People lend guns to friends, esp if they don’t own a gun, for self-defense and hunting purposes. This is America outside NYC.”

The New York congresswoman was aghast by the response. She asked, “You said w/ universal background checks, you wouldn’t be able to “lend” guns to friends. If a background check would be a problem, then you shouldn’t “lend” a gun. And btw, NY is one of the safest states in the country when it comes to guns, incl rural areas.”

Other users were quick to weigh in on Crenshaw’s claims. Economist David Rothschild wondered if the Texas congressman was wading into illegality. He wrote, “If you loan a car to friend with no license (no training and/or has had their license revoked for some legit reason) you can and should be held criminally liable. Same thing for lending guns: you should only be able to lend people that have passed training and background checks.”
