CrossFit Disavows Marjorie Taylor Greene

One of the central themes of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s campaign for a seat in the House of Representatives was her experience as a small business owner, specifically as a CrossFit affiliate gym owner. For the Georgia Republican, it’s been a key part of her “brand,” which at this point pretty much has become the most controversial, vocal far-right conspiracy theorist in Congress.

Last November, just after being elected, she touted her ties to CrossFit when she posted her hotel room workout on Twitter.

Before and during her political rise, the powers that be at CrossFit’s headquarters tried to ignore Greene’s existence and her praise of the company’s workout programs. No longer. In response to inquiries from BuzzFeed News the company now is disavowing Greene because of her history of calling for violence against her political enemies, support for QAnon, efforts to subvert the 2020 presidential election, belief in Jewish space lasers and other similar craziness. Andrew Weinstein, a spokesperson for CrossFit, told BuzzFeed News, “CrossFit supports respectful fact-based political dialogue to address our common challenges, and we strongly oppose the loathsome and dangerous lies attributed to Ms. Greene.”

Together with a partner Greene opened the CrossFit Passion gym in Alpharetta, Ga., in 2013. She no longer owns any part of the business. Her former partner has found being associated with anything that has to do with her so toxic that he’s changed the name of the gym.

To this day she harkens back to her time as a competitive CrossFit athlete. Just last week she used it as justification for her signing onto a bill that would prevent transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports. During debate last Wednesday, she declared on the House floor,” I have competed in sports and I am so thrilled that I was able to do that, that I competed against biological women.”

Ironically, CrossFit announced in 2018 that trans athletes were welcome at its CrossFit Games competitions.
