Countering Trump Admin, British General Says No Rising Threat Level in Iran

When Donald Trump hired John Bolton as National Security Adviser, some worried that the hawkish Bolton might advocate for war. According to some sources Bolton is doing just that as a potential conflict with Iran escalates.

While Bolton and Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo have warned of increasing danger in Iran, one ally is skeptical. Chris Ghika, a British General involved in fighting ISIS, has countered the US narrative on Iran.

The General told reporters, “There’s been no increased threat from Iranian-backed forces. We monitor them along with a whole range of others because that’s the environment we’re in. If the threat level seems to go up then we’ll raise our force protection measures accordingly.”

Iran has blamed Bolton for the United States’ war rhetoric. Hesameddin Ashena, an Iranian Senior Adviser, tweeted to Trump, “You wanted a better deal with Iran. Looks like you are going to get a war instead. That’s what happens when you listen to the mustache. Good luck in 2020!”

Presidential candidates have also come out against potential military action in Iran. Bernie Sanders tweeted, “The United States Congress must do everything it can to prevent the Trump Administration’s attempts to put us on the brink of a catastrophic and unconstitutional war with Iran.”

Elizabeth Warren agreed with those sentiments. Last night, she tweeted, “We cannot let the Trump Admin drag us into yet another war in the Middle East. This is exactly why the President doesn’t have the constitutional authority to declare war. That’s Congress’s job – and that’s why I’m supporting this legislation to prevent a war with Iran.”
