[COMMENTARY/WATCH] ‘Cancun’ Cruz Calls For ‘Zero COVID Mandates’ While His Daughters’ School Requires Masks

Texas Senator Ted Cruz just may be the most universally disliked person currently allowed to still have a Twitter account. Despite being vaccinated like every other member of Congress, Cruz is still aligning with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and other Republican Governors in opposition to mask and vaccine mandates even as the Delta variant rages throughout Red states at astonishingly high rates.

Cruz said he is introducing legislation that would block vaccine passports, mask mandates, and vaccine mandates nationwide. He made the announcement Monday on Fox News.  “There should be no mandates — zero — concerning COVID. That means no mask mandates, regardless of your vaccination status, that means no vaccine mandates, that means no vaccine passports,” Cruz said.

WASHINGTON, DC – APRIL 22: Senate Judiciary Committee member Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) holds a news conference to voice his opposition to adding justices to the U.S. Supreme Court outside the court’s building on April 22, 2021 in Washington, DC. The White House has formed a commission to study possible changes to the Supreme Court, including adding seats or instituting term limits. “The road to anarchy is being paved by this agenda,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said during the news conference and warned that changing the makeup of the court or doing away with the filibuster will “destroy this country.” (Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

Cruz said such mandates violate freedom of choice (they don’t).

“Democrats do not respect your liberty. They do not respect your right to make your choices about your health care, about your children, about your lives,” Cruz said. (He lied.)

By executive order, Gov. Abbott has banned agencies that receive state dollars from enacting mask and vaccine mandates. That includes school districts, although large districts including Austin ISD and Dallas ISD have instituted mask policies in defiance of Abbott. Houston ISD, the state’s largest district, is set to vote on a mask mandate later this week. At the same time, Abbott is asking for out-of-state help as the virus surges in the state and more than 9,000 Texans remain hospitalized with the disease. (He should be denied, but a Democratic Presidential administration just isn’t going to let Americans die like some previous administrations we could point to that are still acting like they’re in power when they’re not).

The rolling two-week daily average of new COVID-19 cases has increased by 165% to 8,533, according to Johns Hopkins University research data. About 45% of the state’s population has been vaccinated against the coronavirus, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Sitting in for Chris Hayes on Wednesday, Mehdi Hassan destroyed Cruz for his hypocrisy while his own daughters were going to a private school with all of the protocols in place. Watch the full segment, below.
