[COMMENTARY] Trump Uses Ashli Babbitt’s Death to Distract From Indictments

When Donald Trump is facing a bombshell news story, he always retaliates with a distraction that has nothing to do with what anyone wants to talk about. Now that his close friend and Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg has been formally charged on 15 counts, the distraction factory is going into hyper-overdrive. Trump loyalists have been laying the foundation of several distractions at once so that they can bust out the talking points at the drop of an indictment. Trump even appeared on a Fox News Town Hall Wednesday night hosted by his co-conspirator Sean “Client Number Three” Hannity mere hours before the indictments were unsealed. Hannity and TFG talked themselves in circles, going back again and again to the cognitive test Trump took last year where he infamously bragged about remembering five whole words.

So as soon as the news about Weisselberg’s perp walk and subsequent Not Guilty (by reason of Not Wanting to Be Rubbed Out By the Russian Mafia, probably) plea hit the airwaves, Trump had to try something to pull the focus anywhere but on his organization’s massive amounts of criming. So he decided to push one of the louder and lousiest distractions possible by issuing a press release that supports the martyring of a January 6th insurrectionist.

“Who shot Ashli Babbitt?” Trump said in a statement on Thursday, just hours after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had announced her appointments to a committee to probe the attack. With prominent Trump critic Liz Cheney appointed to the committee, it’s clear TFG fears all of the actual truth that the rest of his Trumpublicans are trying to rewrite.

Trump’s obtuse question (you did, Dad! She learned by watching you!) echoes the talking points of several right-wing House Republicans, including Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (Q-GA). Paul Gosar (Q-AZ), and Matt Gaetz (Q-FL.), who have all called for the identity of the shooter. Gosar has gone so far as to suggest Ashli Babbitt was “executed” by an officer “lying in wait,” describing her as a “veteran” who was “wrapped in a U.S. flag.”

It’s a pathetic attempt at distraction, and no matter how hard they try to push that narrative, there’s just too much footage available to dispute their story that she was just some delicate flower tourist who was just passing by or something instead of a domestic terrorist deliberately breaching the Capitol.

Trump knows what he’s doing by potentially doxing the member of Mike Pence’s detail who did their job protecting the then-Vice President and the rest of Congress from the uncontrollable crowd. She was warned there was a gun, she kept pressing forward. But Trump doesn’t want anyone talking about Allen Weisselberg, so he’ll jump on one of MAGA’s favorite new sound bites.

Who killed Ashli Babbitt? Twitter be knowing.
