[COMMENTARY] Trump Picks Up Key Endorsement From…The Taliban

Donald Trump loves to brag that “only the best people” surround and support him. Trump pretends he doesn’t enjoy the dubious endorsements from white supremacists like David Duke and fringe right-wing domestic terrorists like the Proud Boys, and now he’ll be able to lock in the elusive radical Islamic terrorist vote now that the Taliban has openly expressed their hope he wins re-election.

In an exclusive interview with CBS News, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said, “We hope he will win the election and wind up U.S. military presence in Afghanistan.” According to Mujahid, there was some concern among the group over Trump’s coronavirus diagnosis. “When we heard about Trump being COVID-19 positive, we got worried for his health, but seems he is getting better,” another Taliban senior leader told CBS News.

The Taliban’s enthusiasm for Trump is grounded in the goal they share of getting U.S. troops out of Afghanistan after 19 years of war – a longtime promise of Trump’s. Tim Murtaugh, the Trump campaign’s communications director, said in a statement to CBS News that Trump “rejects the Taliban’s support” and that the Taliban should know Trump will “always protect American interests by any means necessary”.

The Trump administration signed a historic pact with the Taliban in February in which the U.S. and its allies set a timetable for U.S. troops to withdraw by the spring of 2021. The pact requires the Taliban to break from al Qaeda and negotiate a power-sharing deal with Afghan government rivals.

Despite the campaign’s alleged refusal of the endorsement, it’s one that’s still going to stick to someone who prefers to cozy up to dictators than reprimand them for the things they’ve done to our country.
