[COMMENTARY]: The Right’s Bizarre Defense of the Monarchy

Conservative American commentators have been losing their minds over Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in which she revealed that life inside the English Royal Family was buzzing with racism and nearly drove her to suicide.

Her most stunning claim was that an unnamed member of the Royal Family once asked how dark her baby’s skin tone would be.

Her husband, Prince Harry the Duke of Sussex, confessed that his father Prince Charles, the Duke of Cornwall, had disappointed him.

It was Harry’s love for Meghan that drove him to leave England with her and their son Archie, giving up his place in the line of succession to the British Crown, much like when King Edward VIII abdicated the throne in 1936 to be with his lover, Wallace Simpson, an American divorcée whom he was not allowed to marry.

Given those rare sacrificial acts, it is quite remarkable that right-wingers have opted to cast Harry as a villain and call Meghan a liar.

Consider right-wing propagandist Ben Shapiro, for example.

“The real villain here is not even Meghan. Meghan is whatever Meghan is. Harry is the one who’s the villain. It’s his family, alright? So, whatever I think of Meghan I think twice as badly of Harry,” he said on his radio show on Monday, adding that there was no way Meghan was telling the truth because asking about a baby’s skin tone is too stupid of a question for a sophisticated royal.

“I don’t believe this for a second but here she is saying a thing I don’t believe. Plus she’s a – maybe it’s true and she’s such a bad actress that I can’t tell if it’s true. That’s possible too,” said Shapiro.

Then, on Monday night, a conservative pastor named Shane Vaughn attacked the Duchess, lobbing racist tropes and accusing her of ruining the Royal Family:

Meghan Markle was an American actress that never found fame, that never found what she longed for: attention. And she went into a family that has been established for a thousand years or more and has wreaked havoc upon that family.

I pray every night that God would get a hold of your heart and give you the backbone of a man and that you would act like a prince instead of a pauper, that you would take control of your house and quit letting Jezebel lead you, sir, away from your family, away from your inheritance just so she can cry, talking about suicide. Ain’t nobody trying to commit no suicide. She’s a narcissist. She loves herself too much to kill herself.

Compare that to what bothered the Brits about the interview. Its content did not surprise them in the least. Racism has polluted the monarchy for generations and the memory of Princess Diana’s untimely death in 1997 is still recent enough to be parallel to Meghan’s story, so of course, the public believes her.

What really freaked British viewers out? The abundance of pharmaceutical ads during the commercial breaks.

The right’s embrace of authoritarianism in the United States now includes defending the very institution our forebearers defeated for their independence and our freedom. And, the conservative movement is proudly projecting its increasingly racist brand across the Pond.

It makes me wonder whose side of the Revolutionary War these people would be on if it were being fought today.
