[COMMENTARY] Spotify Had a Choice. And It Chose Joe Rogan Over Neil Young. [VIDEO]

Spotify is now in the process of removing Neil Young’s catalog of music from its service after the legendary singer-songwriter posted (then subsequently took down) an open letter with an ultimatum: Deal with the vaccine misinformation coming from Joe Rogan’s podcast, or lose Young’s music.

Three years into a pandemic, you’d think the powers-that-be at what was founded as a MUSIC SERVICE before taken over by podcasts would choose the actually listenable guy with a deep back catalog of great music, but nah. Spotify had a choice to drop the liar and keep the legend. But Spotify chose the wrong fighter.

If you asked the average person who pays attention to pop culture who they’d rather listen to on the regular: the legendary Neil Young, or the dubious Joe Rogan, I’m guessing most people would choose Young just based on name recognition alone. Aside from his lengthy track record of songs that are embedded in your DNA, Young created the Bridge School Benefit Concert Series and has been involved in various humanitarian and environmental issues over the span of his career. Conversely, Joe Rogan is all the things you wouldn’t want your son to be, amassing a following of bitter and angry young white men who have been known to swarm and dox anyone who dares besmirch Rogan. He brags about being able to self-fellate while spouting racist garbage and COVID propaganda.

Neil Young knows exactly what kind of guy Joe Rogan is, and even though he stands to lose 60% of his revenue by pulling his music from Spotify, that’s exactly what he threatened the platform he’d do if they didn’t get rid of Rogan’s pandering to the lowest common denominator.

Spotify released a weak statement, which I will translate for you beneath it: “We want all the world’s music and audio content to be available to Spotify users. With that comes great responsibility in balancing both safety for listeners and freedom for creators. We have detailed content policies in place and we’ve removed over 20,000 podcast episodes related to COVID since the start of the pandemic. We regret Neil’s decision to remove his music from Spotify, but hope to welcome him back soon.” Translation: “Rogan’s crazy audience scares us and we don’t want to be canceled, the end.”
