[COMMENTARY] Republicans Abandoning Trump As RNC Launches
Republicans launched their national convention on Monday as #RussianNationalConvention was already a top Twitter trend amid multiple GOP scandals, including the Postmaster General committing perjury in front of the House of Representatives.
Donald Trump stood before a small group and talked about voting by mail even as Louis DeJoy told Massachusetts Representative Stephen Lynch that he won’t be replacing any mailboxes or machines that have been removed. Trump has given various excuses and told outright lies in his attempt to discourage the process of voting via mail, even though he has consistently voted by mail in previous elections. Trump mocked the process of using a ballot at home, imitating a typical American voter: “I want to watch TV instead of opening my ballot,” he whined as the group before him applauded.
At the outset of the convention, the Trump Campaign released its “agenda” for their “next term” that reads not unlike a child’s wish list to Santa Claus.
Meanwhile, more Republicans are abandoning the obviously sinking Trumptanic. Aside from the well-known group of Never Trumpers that comprise the Lincoln Project, who just announced a coalition of Republican women against Trump, top officials from the national security community including Colin Powell have pledged to vote for Joe Biden. Former RNC Chairman Michael Steele had distanced himself from Trump long ago and has been a vocal Trump critic, but in light of the impending election, Steele is also focusing on the remaining Trump supporters.
Last week, several prominent Republicans appeared at the Democratic National Convention to denounce Trump and endorse Joe Biden for President. This week’s RNC has no such comparable lineup.
