[COMMENTARY] Pompeo Caves to Trump’s Whining, Says He’ll Release Clinton Emails

Donald Trump knows he’s losing to Joe Biden, and losing badly. His time away from the campaign trail as he recovers from his bout of COVID19 has hurt him badly in the polls, and the fact that he’s been out of the hospital for less than a week yet wants to hold a rally on Saturday is borderline murderous if he’s still testing positive. After Mike Pence’s disastrous performance at Wednesday night’s Vice Presidential Debate, Trump badly needs a boost to get him back in the game if he’s going to close the gap between himself and Biden.

So of course he’s going back to 2016 to try to make it happen.

Trump called in to Fox Business Network on Thursday and used the interview to lash out at two of his most loyal cronies: Attorney General Bill Barr and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, threatening to personally intervene in federal investigations into Democrats over controversies stemming from the 2016 election if they didn’t do it for him.

After he was asked about the Justice Department’s investigation into the origins of the FBI’s Russia probe, Trump responded by saying, “To be honest, Bill Barr is going to go down as either the greatest attorney general in the history of the country or he’s going to go down as a very sad situation,” Trump ranted to host Maria Bartiromo. He then went on to attack his Secretary of State for not releasing the mysterious “33,000 emails” that they say implicate Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and other powerful Democrats in a conspiracy to keep Trump from winning the presidency in 2016.

“She destroyed 33,000 emails! Forget about the fact that they were classified, let’s go. Maybe Mike Pompeo finally finds them, okay?” Trump fumed.

Trump says jump, Mike Pompeo says how high. Pompeo said on Friday that he “might” release the emails before Election Day on November 3rd. Trump desperately needs a bombshell October surprise, but this won’t be it. Her emails were irrelevant in 2016, and they are even more irrelevant now that she’s not his opponent. There is nothing in them to prosecute anyone for. It’s a pathetic attempt at distraction and nothing more.

When you know you’re losing, you become so desperate to save yourself that you make many glaring mistakes. Desperation clouds your vision, your ability to think clearly. Add some heavy steroids and a drug cocktail not available to any other Americans, and you have a recipe for disaster. Trump is feverishly throwing all of the things at the wall to see if anything other than his projectile phlegm sticks to it.

A better strategy for Trump would be to play along with the Debates Commission and agree to a distanced debate with Joe Biden. He doesn’t seem to grasp that the advantage he accuses Biden of having–aides nearby to supply answers, for example–he would also have as well. But the Trump Campaign isn’t known for making any smart moves, choosing instead to hold superspreader events and letting Biden shine in a solo Town Hall on Tuesday night.

The only real October surprise the Trump Team could actually pull off would be behaving like adults running a real presidential campaign, instead of a bunch of juvenile bullies still teasing the smartest girl in the class.
