[COMMENTARY] Don’t Pardon Trump. Censure Him Before He Leaves Office

The issue of Presidential pardons has been a topic on Twitter lately as we’re officially in Trump’s lame duck period. He’s clearly terrified of what his post-White House existence will look like, because he knows Tish James is waiting for him and his main adult children in New York State. Political pundits are already wondering just how many self-pardons Trump might issue, as well as how many he’ll offer to his immediate circle of co-conspirators. In an essay on MSNBC’s website, Michael Conway, former counsel to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, floats the idea that Joe Biden should pardon Donald Trump and Democrats should support it so that the country can “heal and move on”.

With all due respect to Mr. Conway, I can tell you that no one who’s been paying attention these last four years agrees with him. We watched the Trump Administration crime their way through its illegitimate occupation of our White House, with egregious violations of the Hatch Act and the Emoluments Clause being committed on the daily. Trump’s deadly mishandling of the coronavirus epidemic alone should be considered a crime against humanity, and his clear preference for foreign dictators over American citizens is treasonous. Obstructing the traditional peaceful transition of power is yet another treasonous act.

There is a way to get all of Trump’s wrongdoings entered into the historical record, even though it won’t remove him from office any sooner than January 20th. But it would at least guarantee that history will remember him for what he is, so that no future generations can gloss over what really happened. There has been nothing normal about these four years, with 2020 being the most abnormal year of my lifetime, and it’s imperative that none of it is forgotten.

An impeached one-term President who lost the Popular Vote by historic margins–TWICE–not only shouldn’t be pardoned, he should be censured before he can pardon himself and flee the country, something a lot of people are extremely concerned about. If House Democrats would censure Trump, everything he’s done will be recorded for all of whatever’s left of human history. Senate Democrats supporting this measure could also bring censure against their Republican counterparts for their continued support of Trump and his crimes against the country.

Even better, if Trump is censured, he is required to appear in person to hear all of the accusations against him, and he cannot respond in real time. While nothing would stop him from Tweet-storming after the fact, Trump would be forced to sit in the House and listen to the members literally read him to filth, and he wouldn’t be able to say a word.

Now imagine this being broadcast to the entire planet as it happens live. Everything Trump has lied about or tried to cover up or denied will be heard by everyone, including his most devoted supporters. I don’t expect censure to change everyone’s minds, but the truth is the truth is the truth, whether they like it or not, and all of that truth needs to come out before Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are sworn into their rightful offices on January 20, 2021.

There is also the very real chance that Trump may flee the country before he can be prosecuted. If anyone is a flight risk, it’s the guy with literally everything to lose. All jokes aside, it’s imperative that Trump is held accountable for what he’s done to this country. We’re now just another one of his bankrupt casinos, a mess he doesn’t care that he made because he knows someone will just clean it up for him. Democrats have always had to do this, fix the broken systems created by Republicans again and again. It’s time to break that pattern and show some spine.

Americans are dying by the thousands every single day. It’s time to speak for the dead. Instead of just quietly putting everything back together with stoic grace, it’s time the Democrats screamed Trump’s injustices into the historical record. I’m calling for House Democrats to censure Trump before he can issue a single pardon to himself or any of his cronies. Before they can sell their book proposals. Before the Georgia Senate runoffs. Before Christmas. Before he can get away with any more criming on the American taxpayers’ dime. If no one is above the law, it’s time someone actually proved it.

Censure Trump, and do it as soon as possible.
