[COMMENTARY] DeSantis Skipping Trump Florida Rally to Remain at Surfside Condo Collapse Site

On Thursday, the Trump Organization and its chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg, pleaded not guilty to criminal charges brought by the Manhattan district attorney, regarding suspected tax fraud. Trump accused the prosecutors of being politically motivated, saying: “The Republican party should not allow this to happen. It’s a radical left disgrace to our country, and nobody should stand for it – not even Democrats. Republicans must fight back. This will rip our country apart!”

So of course he’s having a rally as soon as possible to keep his base riled up and raring to go for the mythical campaign he thinks he’ll have in 2024. The rally was billed as a Fourth of July celebration featuring fireworks and was expected to draw several thousand in a state Trump won by more than three points in 2020, but it’s really just a giant public distraction from the current and still forthcoming indictments.

TOPSHOT – Former US President Donald Trump arrives for his campaign-style rally in Wellington, Ohio, on June 26, 2021. – Donald Trump held his first big campaign-style rally since leaving the White House, giving a vintage, rambling speech Saturday to an adoring audience as he launched a series of appearances ahead of next year’s midterm elections.
The former president, who has been booted from social media platforms and faces multiple legal woes, has flirted with his own potential candidacy in 2024, but in the 90-minute address at a fair grounds in Ohio he made no clear mention of his political future, even when the crowd chanted “four more years! four more years!” (Photo by STEPHEN ZENNER / AFP) (Photo by STEPHEN ZENNER/AFP via Getty Images)

Trump and his ego are smokescreening and gaslighting in Sarasota, where the Florida Faithful will risk sunburn to hear him whine about the “Witch Hunt” in New York. Noticeably absent from the adoring crowd: the very Trumpy Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis. “DeathSantis” normally would be attached to some part of Trump’s lower extremities, but he chose to remain close to the site of the tragic Surfside condo collapse and subsequent evacuation of nearby buildings that may now also be at risk for a similar collapse of their own.

Oh, and there’s a hurricane a-coming, too.

While collecting an entrance fee at the rally, Trump has pledged to raise funds for the Surfside recovery effort, therefore still managing to profit from American death and tragedy while also setting himself up for tweets comparing his political career to the pile of rubble he’s pretending to care about.

This week, Trump told the Fox News host Sean Hannity he had decided on whether to run again in 2024, saying: “It’s not that I want to. The country needs it. We have to take care of this country. It isn’t fun, fighting constantly, fighting always.”

Yeah, it’s kind of hard to run for anything when you’re going to be sitting in court, but keep up that smokescreen, it’s putting extra strain on those lungs a whole lot worse than a little THC.
