February is Black History Month, which means we can all expect plenty of “But why is there no ‘White History Month’?” tweets from all of the worst people. You know, the same kind of people who tweeted obtuse tributes to MLK the same week they killed voting rights legislation that would make it easier for Black people and other people in communities of color to vote. The same people who see the two Americas, the one for “regular” Americans and the one for “African Americans.”
The deeply rooted racism in the Republican Party has never been more overtly on display for all of America to see, and Black History Month 2022 promises to be fraught with controversy thanks to the Trump-enabled GOP and its voting base.
Now, I’m not calling all Republicans racists, but many people are saying it. It’s safe to say that if someone is spouting something on the racist/xenophobic/anti-semitic/homophobic/transphobic, etc tip, it’s most likely not a Democrat. They keep showing us their true selves, so we keep shining a light on them. As a cishet white woman in America, I see myself as an ally to all of the communities I wasn’t born into, with the exception of Republicans. I can co-exist among them, I understand how they operate, but my whiteness isn’t to ever be taken as me siding with any of their hate speech. While I know communities of color don’t need anyone else to speak on their behalf (because we don’t have their lived experiences, see how that works?), it’s important for white people to be allies who amplify the messaging without appropriating it. And it’s also on all of us to call out the racism in our fellow white people, so I’m going to do that right now with Florida White People Ron and Casey DeSantis.
It just dawned on me that @GovRonDeSantis is trying to officially cancel Black History Month. You know because it might make people uncomfortable.

Yes, I know Casey DeSantis is fighting breast cancer (as the daughter of a breast cancer survivor, I’m very empathetic to that situation), but that doesn’t negate this little stunt she’s pulling with her dull husband. Our pal Patriot Takes tweeted this hot garbage ahead of Black History Month.
The contest lists 5 suggested Floridians including US House Rep. Bryon Donalds who objected to the January 6th election certification, a sheriff on DeSantis’ “Task Force to Reopen Florida,” Dr. Joseph Ladapo who shared unproven covid treatments, and another DeSantis appointee. pic.twitter.com/ezzcR1Ahoh

Yes, you read that correctly. It seems Casey and Ron want the kids to only write about the “good” Black people they’ve been able to trap in a full-on Florida version of “Get Out.” Dr. Joseph Ladapo is an especially bad choice. Did you catch that he’s anti-mask but is also somehow the state’s Surgeon General? Because in DeathSantis speak, bad is good and viruses are a for-profit business, so it’s on brand to be encouraging kids to admire dubious characters like a state rep who believed the Big Lie or the state’s anti-mask, anti-vax Surgeon General. Okay, Florida.
