Earlier this week, Donald Trump threatened to use the military against United States citizens who are protesting police brutality. These comments were a bridge too far for Generals James Mattis, John Kelly and John Allen who all condemned the President’s words.
On Sunday, Colin Powell became the latest former military leader to blast Trump for his response to the George Floyd protests. But in the process of ripping Trump, Powell also endorsed his 2020 opponent Joe Biden.
Powell told CNN’s Jake Tapper that Trump, “lies all the time.” The General continued:
“That is dangerous for our democracy, it is dangerous for our country, and I think what we’re seeing now, those massive protest movements…I think this suggests the country is getting wise to this and we’re not going to put up with it anymore.”
The military leader didn’t only have venom for the President. He also ripped Republican lawmakers who have enabled him. “I watched senators heading into the chamber the other day, after all this broke, when a reporter said, ‘What do you have to say?’ They had nothing to say. They would not react.”
The Republican Powell ended the interview by endorsing Biden. He told Tapper, “I’m very close to Joe Biden in a social matter and on a political matter … And he is now the candidate, and I will be voting for him.“
