Following his loss in 2020 and the subsequent insurrection, Donald Trump’s political future was in doubt. For a number of reasons, however, the GOP decided he was their best option going forward.
When Joe Biden stepped into the White House in January, he had a number of obstacles ahead. Many of them were created by his predecessor. There was not only a mess in Afghanistan that needed to be dealt with, there was also Trump’s completely incompetent handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thanks to these hurdles, Biden’s approval rating has been trending downward. And Trump smells blood in the water. According to CNN’s David Gergen, the only thing that could stop the 45th president from running again is a stint in jail.
Gergen said during a weekend spot, “The signs are that he is increasingly interested. His interest intensifies when he sees Biden in trouble.”
The long-time political commentator continued, “And now with Biden’s approval rating sinking down into the low 40s and the economy still not straightening out and the pandemic still not over, that just makes Trump very very hungry. I think it’s going to take something hugely unexpected or a dramatic change in his health or a prison sentence to stop him.”
