CNN Finally Fires Controversial Conservatve Contributor Rick Santorum

The competing cable news networks all want to appeal to viewers from all walks of the political aisle. It doesn’t exactly work out that way, though. Of the big 3 networks, CNN probably tries the hardest to have Conservative voices on their channel.

Rick Santorum is a good example of one of CNN’s outside voices. The former Pennsylvania senator has contributed to the network for years. But now his time with CNN is coming to an end after controversial comments about Native Americans.

Santorum said to a Conservative youth group, “We birthed a nation from nothing. I mean, there was nothing here. I mean, yes we have Native Americans, but candidly there isn’t much Native American culture in American culture.”

Almost immediately, calls came for the network to fire Santorum. But for nearly a month, CNN ignored the calls. They came to the decision, though, once they realized none of their anchors were willing to have them on their shows.

Santorum was given the opportunity to explain his comments. He did not have a good showing. An executive from the network told the Huff Post, “Leadership wasn’t particularly satisfied with that appearance. None of the anchors wanted to book him. So he was essentially benched anyway. I think after that appearance, it was pretty clear we couldn’t use him again.”

CNN has yet to release a statement on Santrorum’s departure.
