Since becoming the Director of the CIA in January of 2017, Mike Pompeo has been bombarded with questions about Russia. Pompeo has attempted to warn of future Russian meddling while also hoping to strengthen the relationship between the two countries.
The CIA Director has to carefully walk the line with Russia as that has been his directive from the President. It was seemingly in that spirit that Pompeo today released a statement congratulation the country on Russia Day.
The statement read:
“On behalf of President Trump and the American people, I congratulate the people of Russia on the occasion of “Russia Day.” As you mark almost three decades since the beginning of constitutional reforms in Russia, the United States honors the Russian people’s continued aspirations for the democratic principles of universal freedom, civil liberties, and the rule of law.”
Pompeo had just held meetings with Vladimir Putin last month in Sochi. The former Kansas Congressman said of the relationship, “We’ll protect our nation’s interests but there are places that our two countries can find where we can be cooperative, we can be productive, we can be accumulative, we can work together to make our two peoples more, and frankly the world, more successful too.”
This language largely parrots that of the President. Trump tweeted in early May, “Very good call yesterday with President Putin of Russia. Tremendous potential for a good/great relationship with Russia, despite what you read and see in the Fake News Media. Look how they have misled you on “Russia Collusion.” The World can be a better and safer place. Nice!”
