Strange Behavior
The Evans family noticed their cat, Larry, had been staring at the same spot on the wall for hours on end. Concerned, they tried to distract her with toys and treats, but nothing seemed to work.
They took her to the vet, but the doctor couldn't find anything wrong with her eyes or ears. The family started to get frustrated and worried as Larry continued to stare at the wall day after day. It seems that something more sinister was at play.
The Perfect Family
The Evans family consisted of Beverley and Paul and their two children, Peter and Amelia. They lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Ever since the children came back from visiting their cousins, they had been nagging Beverley and Paul to get a pet. They had so much fun playing with their cousin’s dog and cat that they now wanted one of their own.
A New Family Member
Beverley and Paul debated whether it was a good idea. Paul was an avid gardener and he wasn’t thrilled with the fact that having a dog might ruin all his hard work.
And so they came to the conclusion that getting a cat might be the better option. They sat down with the children and announced to them that they were allowed to get a cat. They were overjoyed and couldn’t wait to go to the shelter to give one cat a new home.
Welcome Home, Lawrence
Once they got to the animal shelter, Peter and Amelia quickly fell in love with a pitch-black male tabby cat. He caught their attention immediately with his big yellow eyes.
The cat was shy at first but soon came out of his shell to play with the children. Peter and Amelia finally had the pet they had wished for. They decided to name him Lawrence but called him Larry for short.
A Happy Cat
Larry would spend his days lounging around the house and playing with the various toys the Evans family had provided for him.
He played with the children when they returned from school and the family could see he was a happy and contented cat. Until one day they noticed Larry began acting very strangely.
The Spot
Larry had begun sitting in one spot facing a wall. The family didn’t really think anything of it at first. Maybe Larry liked it because it was cozy and warm.
He just sat there and stared at the wall. Beverley became intrigued and thought it was strange that a cat would just sit in one spot for hours on end.
The Strange Behavior
At first, the Evans family thought Larry was just bored or tired. They tried to play with him, but he would not budge from his spot on the floor, fixated on the same spot on the wall.
They noticed Larry had stopped eating and drinking water, which was unusual for him. They started to get worried and took him to the vet, but the doctor couldn't find anything wrong with him.
The Mysterious Spot
As the days passed, Larry's behavior became more and more concerning. The Evans family tried everything to get him to move, but he remained fixated on the same spot on the wall.
Beverley even tried moving his food and water bowls closer to him, but he wouldn't eat or drink. They even tried taking him to a different room, but as soon as they put him down, he would bolt back to the same spot on the wall.
The Suspicious Handyman
A few days later, the family hired a handyman to fix a leak in the kitchen. As he was leaving, he noticed Larry staring at the wall. "Strange," he muttered to himself.
Beverley overheard and asked him if he knew what was going on. He shook his head and left, but something about his reaction made Beverley suspicious.
The Unsettling Feeling
Days turned into weeks, and Larry’s behavior continued to unsettle the family. They tried everything to snap him out of it, but nothing seemed to work.
Beverley had a nagging feeling that something was off. She felt like Larry was trying to tell them something, but she couldn’t figure out what it was.
Paul tried to calm her down, telling her that cats were unpredictable creatures and that maybe Larry was just going through a phase.
The Children Notice
Peter and Amelia were also getting worried because Larry didn’t even want to play with them anymore. He was so fixated on the wall that it began to scare them.
Beverley assured them that Larry probably just liked the spot because it was warm. She couldn’t tell them about how worried she and Paul really were.
Fright Night
It was one night that Beverley would receive the fright of her life. Everyone had already settled into bed when she heard inexplicable scratching sounds on the bedroom door.
She got up and opened the door. It was Larry, and he was trying to get in. He jumped onto the bed and stayed there for the rest of the night. Beverley thought it was strange, but it looked like Larry had been spooked by something.
Back To The Usual Spot
When Beverley woke up the next morning, Larry was already gone. When she went to the kitchen to make breakfast, Larry was back in the same spot.
She couldn’t understand why he had come to bed last night, and now he was back at the usual spot. Something didn’t add up, and she wanted to find a way to know what was going on.
Thumping Noises
The next night, the family heard strange noises coming from the wall Larry had been fixated on. It sounded like thumping and scraping, but they couldn't quite make out what was making the noise.
They searched the house but found nothing out of the ordinary. The family started to feel like they were going crazy, but Larry’s unwavering stare kept them on high alert.
Not Letting Up
Days turned into weeks, and the thumping sounds continued. The family tried to ignore it, hoping it would go away on its own, but the noises only grew louder and more persistent.
Although he was worried, Paul reassured his family that it could just be a family of birds that started roosting in their walls, and that’s what was causing the noises. But Beverley was not convinced.
What Could It Be?
When Paul was at work and the children at school, Beverley decided that she would have a look at what was going on. She noticed that Larry was a lot calmer during the day and wasn’t staring as intently as before.
Maybe this was the end of the staring then, she thought. He still sat by the spot, but he wasn’t staring. Maybe whatever was there had moved on? Or so she thought.
It’s Back
Later that day, as she was preparing dinner, Beverley noticed the change in Larry’s behavior. He was back to staring at the wall, his tail swaying back and forth hypnotizingly.
Beverley was convinced that whatever was in the walls had returned, and now Larry was back to acting strangely. Beverley knew that drastic steps needed to be taken, but she had no idea how bad the situation truly was. They were in grave danger.
Horrifying
When Paul entered the room, he didn’t notice the cat at first. What threw him off was the bizarre expression on his wife’s face. She seemed concerned, nervously chewing on her nails as she stared at their pet.
His eyes trailed from her face to where she was staring, and that’s when he saw it. His eyes grew wide at the horrifying sight, “What on earth?”
It Got Worse
Larry's behavior became stranger by the minute. At first, he was just staring at the wall, but now, he was growling lowly, his face pressed against the wall.
Paul noticed the strange sway in his tail. It was moving back and forth ever so slowly, almost in a hypnotic motion. It was clear that there was something in their wall, and they were about to make a horrifying discovery.
Something Bad Is Going On
Paul didn’t know what to do. He stood frozen and watched as his wife crept closer to Larry. She lifted him up and tried to walk away from the wall. That’s when she noticed the foamy white drool that had begun seeping from the cat’s mouth.
When she placed Larry down in a different room, he instantly jumped back up and ran for the wall. His low growls continued. “Honey,” Beverly breathed, “I think something bad is going on.”
A Freaky Situation
Paul could tell how much it was freaking Beverly out, and he couldn’t blame her. The interaction sent shivers down his spine, too. He had never seen anything like this before.
It was like the cat had been possessed by whatever it was that was behind the wall. And it wanted nothing more than to bring it out into the open. But was that really what the couple wanted?
What To Do?
Seeing how this freaked his wife out, Paul did the only thing he could think of. He grabbed a bag of Larry’s favorite food and placed it in his bowl, hoping it would get him away from the wall.
But the cat was so focused on whatever it was that hid behind the wall that he didn’t even look when Paul put his food out.
Not Normal
That was when the couple realized that something sinister was going on in their home. They had never seen Larry act that way before, so that had to mean he was trying to inform them of something.
But what was it? What was the cat seeing or smelling that made him go so crazy? And was it a danger to the family?
Not Sure
Paul wasn’t sure about any of those questions, but he was sure about one thing. He needed to get the cat to stop doing what he was doing.
Larry was scaring everyone in the house, and he couldn’t let it continue. But stopping the persistent cat was easier said than done, as he would soon find out.
It Wasn’t Working
They tried for hours on end to get their poor, distressed cat away from the wall, but nothing was working. They even tried closing him in a room, but he would start to cry, begging them to let him out.
The situation was starting to scare Beverly and the kids. Paul wouldn’t admit it, but he felt pretty uneasy, too. They were in for a sinister discovery.
Tried Everything
After hours of failed attempts, a lot of scratches, a few bite marks, and a lot of crying, the couple decided to just give up. They had tried every trick they could think of, but none of them worked on the enthralled cat.
They tried to go on with their day as if nothing had happened. But the cat was nowhere near done with them.
Heading To Bed
The day had passed, and the sun had slowly started to dip beneath the horizon when the family decided to sit down for dinner. Larry, determined as ever, was still standing at the wall, scratching and releasing chilling calls.
However, they tried their best to block him out. That was until they headed to bed. That was when things took an unexpected turn.
Larry Comes Back To Bed
That night, as she lay in bed, Beverly made sure to leave the bedroom door open. She knew Larry would be coming in to sleep there again.
It happened every night. Maybe he was just getting cold from sitting by the wall all day. Beverley hoped that was the explanation and that it wasn’t anything sinister.
A Restless Night
But as she was drifting off to sleep, she heard a strange scratching sound coming from the walls. She sat up and listened intently. It sounded like something was moving inside the walls.
Her heart began racing as she turned to Paul, but he was fast asleep, unaware of the strange sounds surrounding them. Beverly knew that she wouldn’t be able to sleep until she knew what was causing the strange sounds.
Investigation
Fed up with the situation, Beverly jumped out of bed. She was determined to get to the bottom of this madness, even if it was the last thing she did.
With that thought in mind, she walked to the other room, where Larry was, and pressed her ear against the wall, hoping to hear what was going on.
A Scratching Sound
Beverly could instantly hear something coming from behind the wall. It sounded like something was moving inside of it. She leaned closer, frowning at the strange sound.
Was something scratching the walls from the other side? The thought alone was enough to send an ice-cold chill through her entire body, making her freeze in place.
Run!
Beverly wanted to run. It was all her instincts were telling her to do. But she was frozen in place. Fear had gripped her, making her listen to the sound that had been driving her mad the entire day.
She whimpered, realizing that her mind was getting the better of her. Or was it? Was this really just her imagination playing tricks on her?
Be Calm
After what felt like an eternity, Beverly managed to calm herself down enough to regain control of her body. Her movements were slow as she pushed herself away from the wall. But what happened after that was nothing more than a blur.
Beverly sprinted back to her room with Larry hot on her heels. The two of them snuck into bed, but Beverly already knew she wouldn’t be getting any sleep.
Calling In The Professionals
Beverley spent the rest of that night staring up at the ceiling. And the first thing she did the next morning was call an exterminator to check the house.
She was terrified thinking about what could be lurking inside of their walls and what its presence could mean for her family. Was she right to be worried? Or was she just overreacting?
Such Fear
Beverly feared that it could be a family of rats or perhaps even raccoons. Not only was she scared for her home, but she was also scared that something might’ve been trying to attack her beloved pet.
Little did she know that the thing lurking in her walls was far more menacing and dangerous than a stray raccoon looking for a snack.
Exterminator
Beverly had to wait a few hours, but when the exterminator showed up, she couldn’t be more relieved. The man had a look around the entire house, and his findings were rather unsettling.
He didn't find any pests at all. But seeing the woman’s distress, he suggested that she try calling a contractor to check the walls. He noted that something fishy was certainly going on.
The Wall Guy
Beverly let the exterminator out and immediately followed his advice. The contractor said he would be there in less than an hour, and once again, Beverly could feel her anxiety building.
When the contractor arrived, he took a look at the wall and immediately knew something was wrong. He could hear the scratching sound, too.
Tough Choice
The contractor told Beverly that he would have to break the wall down in order to see what was inside it. This left her in a situation she never thought she would be in. Was she really willing to go that far?
Beverly wasn’t sure how to proceed. She wanted this madness to end, but was she really willing to break her wall down in the process?
Making The Call
Beverly knew that this was a decision that she wouldn’t be able to make on her own. Breaking the wall down would already cost a small fortune. Building it back up will cost even more.
She needed to speak to her husband before making any decisions like that. So she called Paul and got his opinion on the matter. What did he have to say?
Consent
Paul, who was just as fed up as Beverly was, instantly agreed to the demolition and repairs that would be required to put an end to the madness they had been facing.
But Beverly was still a little unsure about the whole situation. She wasn’t really sure if she wanted to know what it was that was keeping her up at night. What if it wasn’t as innocent as she thought?
Doubts
It took a while for Beverly to make up her mind after putting the phone down. But just as she was about to give the contractor her answer, something happened.
Larry went ballistic as the scratches began to reappear. And that was when she decided that enough was enough. Nothing that was in there could be as maddening as that noise. Or so she thought.
Do It!
With a scream of frustration, Beverly turned to face the contractor. “Do it… Just do it,” she said through gritted teeth. “But,” the contractor began, but Beverly cut him off.
“I don’t care what you have to do or how much it will cost. Just find whatever is causing it and get rid of the thing before I lose my mind.”
Removing The Wall
He got his tools and started to remove the drywall. Beverley watched anxiously as he worked, wondering what they would find.
She could see how intrigued Larry was getting. It was almost like the mystery would be solved for him as well. He kept meowing when the contractor began hitting the walls. Beverley wondered if Larry knew something that they didn’t.
Shining A Light
As the contractor peeled away the layers of drywall, a small hole appeared. At first, he couldn't see anything through it. But then, he shone his flashlight inside and gasped in horror.
He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. He expected the problem to be old pipes or maybe even a wasp’s nest, but it was so much worse than he ever could’ve imagined.
Playing Tricks On Him?
He rubbed at his eyes and took a deep breath. Was his mind playing tricks on him, or was the situation far worse than he thought? He took another look, and sure enough, there it was.
There, inside the wall, was a small room. It was a secret room hidden inside the walls of Beverley's home. It had been there for years, and Beverley had never known.
She Couldn’t See
The concerned woman stood behind him, hearing his reaction. The only problem was that she couldn’t see anything. He was blocking her view from the strange discovery.
She tried to take a step forward, but before she could, she heard a familiar sound. It was Larry. He was at the wall once again, making the same growling noise as before.
Getting Answers
The man looked over his shoulder, staring down at the anxious cat. “Ma’am, would you mind holding him? I’m going to open this up a bit more.”
She did as the man asked and quickly scooped Larry into her arms. He tried to escape, desperate to get closer to the wall, but she held him firmly. She was about to get the answers she needed.
The Secret Room
Beverley was stunned as the contractor broke through the wall. She couldn’t believe her eyes as the pieces of drywall fell to the floor. Slowly but surely, he began revealing the secret room.
She had lived in that house for years and had no idea that it was there. She always thought it was just an ordinary wall. If it hadn’t been for Larry, she never would’ve discovered the sinister truth.
The Room
She was at a loss for words as she stared at the wall. The small room had been there all along, and she never suspected a thing. But she didn’t have the answers she needed yet.
This was creepy, and Beverley couldn’t believe what she was seeing. But it still didn’t explain the scratching and thumping sounds they heard. She asked the contractor to look for a bird’s nest.
No Nests
The man spent an hour looking through the room, but he couldn’t find any nests. He saw some cockroaches, but that was nothing out of the ordinary.
He told Beverley that they might be causing the scratching sounds as they crawled all over the walls. But she wasn’t convinced. The sounds she heard were definitely caused by something bigger than a cockroach.
Not Convinced
She could still hear the strange sounds echoing in the back of her mind. How could these small insects make such a loud thumping sound?
She supposed that it could explain Larry’s behavior, but she wasn’t entirely convinced. She feared that something else was living in the secret room, and the thought terrified her.
Hatching A Plan
She asked the contractor to board up the wall again. She had a plan. She was going to get surveillance cameras to put around the house to see if there was something they were missing.
She had a feeling that this was now more than Larry just staring at the wall. Something was there, and she was to get to the bottom of it once and for all.
Setting Up
That weekend, Paul set up the cameras exactly where Beverley had asked him to. They were nervous and afraid of what they might see on the cameras.
Paul was as distressed as his wife when he heard about the secret room. He knew that it was his duty to keep his family safe, and right now, none of them felt safe.
Larry
But there was more to it than just his wife and children. Over the last few days, he had to watch helplessly as their cat sat by the wall, stressed out of his mind.
Poor Larry was suffering because of this, and he, too, needed to be at peace. He hardly ate and only played occasionally. It was not healthy for him. Beverley needed to find the problem fast.
Could This Be It?
During the day, Beverley couldn’t contain how anxious she was. Were they finally going to find out what was causing Larry all this stress?
After dinner, Beverly switched on all the cameras and headed to bed. She felt a wave of nervousness wash over her. She lay still and waited for Larry to join them.
Movement Detected
He came right when the clock struck midnight. She grabbed her phone and watched for any activity of the cameras. Her nerves were shot, and she waited with bated breath to see something appear.
At first, the results were pretty underwhelming. There was nothing of interest until half an hour later. That’s when everything changed.
A Familiar Sound
She sat up when she heard the strange sound. She couldn’t help but frown. Surely that wasn’t what she thought it was, right? But as she kept listening, the sound became more distinct.
She could distinctly hear very soft footsteps. Larry gave a low meow. And then she saw movement. This was far worse than she thought.
Who Is That?
The cameras showed a man jumping down from their attic. He was crouching down and heading to the kitchen. Beverley couldn’t believe her eyes. They had an intruder.
She woke Paul and showed him the camera footage. He immediately called 911. They stayed in the bedroom for safety. When they finally heard the police vehicle pull up, they saw the guy trying to escape back through the attic, and Paul sprang into action.
Caught Out
He pulled the guy down while Beverley let the cops inside. The guy had been living in the crawlspace of their house for a few months.
He promised he didn't want to cause any harm. He just needed a place to stay. The police took him away but later released him to a shelter as the Evans didn’t press charges.
Trying To Figure It Out
Beverley and Paul went back over the past few weeks, trying to figure out if they had missed any other signs. They had noticed that some of their food was missing, but they had blamed it on Larry.
They had assumed that they had misplaced them, but they now realized that the intruder had taken them. Larry never sat by the wall again, and the Evans family was grateful to him because they saw Larry as their hero who had warned them of the stranger inside their house.
