CA’s LT. Governor Endorses Christy Smith for Congress

California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis Backs Christy Smith’s CA-25 Rematch Campaign

SANTA CLARITA, CA — Continuing to demonstrate her extensive support from prominent statewide leaders in her rematch campaign for California’s 25th Congressional District, today former State Assemblywoman Christy Smith earned the endorsement of  California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis.

Today’s announcement follows Smith’s recent endorsements from California State Controller Betty Yee, California State Treasurer Fiona Ma, and California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara.

In announcing her endorsement of Smith’s Congressional campaign, Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis remarked:

“We need Christy Smith in Congress. In the State Legislature, Christy proved herself as a bold, effective representative on behalf of her constituents, working to provide PPE and economic aid to frontline workers during the pandemic, combat climate change, fully fund public schools, and ensure our economy works for everyone. There is no candidate in the race more qualified or better equipped to lead the charge in Washington, and I know she will take that same drive and unyielding commitment with her to represent the people of California’s 25th Congressional district.”

Last week, Smith, who received 36,000 more votes than any Democrat ever in CA-25, launched her rematch campaign for Congress by releasing the powerful video ad “Let’s Get This Done”, which features the former Assemblywoman contrasting her vision for the 25th District with Mike Garcia’s cozying up to insurrectionists while highlighting the incredibly close margin in 2020.

Previously, Smith’s campaign announced endorsements from California State Controller Betty Yee, California State Treasurer Fiona Ma, California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara, Los Angeles County Democratic Party (LACDP) Chair Mark Gonzalez and LACDP Vice Chair Sergio Carillo, as well as five key labor unions: International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 12, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1277, International Union of Painters & Allied Trades District Council 36, Ironworkers Local 433, and UA Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 761.

Christy Smith is a 40-year resident of Santa Clarita with a proven record of fighting for the 25th District. In 2020, Smith received over 36,000 more votes than any Democrat in CA-25 history, finishing just 333 votes shy of victory in the general election. CA-25 was the closest Congressional race in California and one of the top three closest Congressional races in the country.

As a State Assemblymember, Smith worked hard every day to advance common-sense solutions to address the challenges facing the communities she represented. Before being sworn into the California State Assembly in 2019, Smith served two terms as a Governing Board Member and as President of the highly successful Newhall School District. Prior to her time in elected office, while raising two daughters, Smith served as a PTA and site council member and also founded the Valencia Valley Technological Education Foundation. Before then, she started her career in public service as an analyst at the U.S. Department of Education. A graduate of Hart High School, Smith attended College of the Canyons and graduated with honors from UCLA with a B.A. in Political Science. She currently lives in Newhall, with her husband Phil, along with their two daughters, Chelsea and Chandler.
