Canada Trade Talks In Jeopardy After Leaked ‘Off The Record’ Trump Comments
Donald Trump’s trade talks with Canada were in trouble on Friday morning after an “off the record” conversation with a Bloomberg reporter was leaked.
A report from the Toronto Star focuses on comments Trump made about refusing to make any compromises with Canadian officials. Trump admitted he wouldn’t state his refusal to compromise in public because “it’s going to be so insulting they’re not going to be able to make a deal.”
“Here’s the problem. If I say no — the answer’s no. If I say no, then you’re going to put that, and it’s going to be so insulting they’re not going to be able to make a deal…I can’t kill these people,” the President shockingly said about Canadian officials.
Trump then admitted to “scaring the Canadians into submission by repeatedly threatening to impose tariffs.”
“Off the record, Canada’s working their ass off. And every time we have a problem with a point, I just put up a picture of a Chevrolet Impala,” Trump told his source. The Impala is manufactured by General Motors at its Oshawa, Ontario plant.
Trump’s off the record comments arrive just days after the POTUS said he had reached one of the largest trade deals of all time with Mexico. That deal is still considered a “preliminary pact” according to Trump’s own administration.
