During a February hearing, Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) accused Mark Meadows (R-NC) of using a black Trump staffer as a prop. Meadows was clearly stung by the claims and reacted defensively. The North Carolina lawmaker found an unusual ally as Democratic Congressman Elijah Cummings came to his defense and called him a friend.
Meadows has a strong relationship with Donald Trump who is now launching a near daily attack on Cummings. Today, on Morning Joe, host Mika Brzezinski called Meadows “spineless” for not sticking up for Cummings during the President’s attack on his character.
The North Carolina congressman released a lukewarm Monday statement that neither supported Cummings nor refuted Trump. Meadows wrote, “No one works harder for his district than Elijah. He’s passionate about the people he represents, and no, Elijah is not a racist. I am friends with both men, President Trump and Chairman Cummings, I know them both well, and neither is a racist.”
This statement infuriated the Morning Joe co-host who said:
“You were deeply shocked and appalled that you were called a racist and Elijah stood up for you. Right there in front of the cameras, come what may, no matter what happened to him he stood with his friend. And you couldn’t even do it. But you were so upset, you were crying. Like a baby. You were crying so hard at the thought of being called a racist, so you know how much that hurts especially if it’s not true and you did not stand up for your friend. So you have just shown America that you cannot be counted on. You have just showed your voters you cannot be counted on, that you will take the weak way out. That was pathetic!”
