Chief Justice John Roberts has responded to the leak of a draft opinion, confirming that it is authentic, and promising that the deadly imposition on reproductive rights laid out in the document will not be changed in response to the public outrage and will of the people.
The right to privacy in healthcare has been affirmed by the Supreme Court since Roe v. Wade was settled in 1973, but with Donald Trump’s presidency and appointment of a full third of the bench, the court has move drastically toward the right, and has affirmed state laws attacking this right. The leaked draft opinion, from February, calls that decision “egregiously wrong from the start,” and overrules decisions that blocked states from enacting laws banning abortion.
The debate overnight and into this morning has been about whether the document was real, how it came to be leaked, and what recourse the American people have to prevent this deadly decision that will cost lives.
In a statement released by the court, Chief Justice Roberts answers two of those questions and addresses the third.

Calling the leak a betrayal, he says that the document is authentic, and that there is no amount of pressure or will of the American people that will change it, although he does affirm that it is a draft and does not “represent a decision by the Court or the final position of any member.” He says that an investigation is being launched to find the source of the leak.
