An active shooter outside the Pentagon has reportedly injured multiple bystanders and officers, and caused a lockdown. This story is still developing, and motives and other information about the shooter have not yet been revealed.

Law enforcement officers are seen near the entrance of the Pentagon after a report of an active shooter and lockdown in Washington, DC on August 3, 2021. – The Pentagon was on lockdown after a shooting at a subway station just outside the secure US military headquarters. Employees in the US Defense Department headquarters in the Arlington suburb of Washington were ordered to shelter in place amid reports of several gunshots and injuries in the station, the entrance of which is just a few dozen yards (meters) from the building’s main doors. Around 11am on Tuesday, the Pentagon Force Protection Agency shared through it’s official Twitter account that there had been an incident at the Pentagon Transit Center, and that the Pentagon was placed on lockdown. The public was asked to avoid the area.

About an hour later the agency further shared that the area was secure but that it was still an active crime scene, and again requested the public to stay away.

According to the Washington Post, the incident was at the bus station — “inside the Pentagon parking lot, but outside Pentagon security,” an area accessible to the general public.

Official sources are referring to this as an “active violence incident,” but there are multiple reports of gunshots and WTOP reports that members of the press in the area heard gunshots themselves, and one reporter captured video that appears to show victims on the ground being treated by emergency responders.

WDVM reports that officials have said one victim was transported to a hospital by helicopter, and two additional victims were transported by ambulance. One of these victims is reportedly a police officer.
