[BREAKING] Jan 6th House Select Committee Issues Subpoenas to Founders of Oath Keepers, Proud Boys, & Other Right-Wing Militia

When House Select Committee Chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) said the committee would be issuing “almost 20” new subpoenas in connection with their investigation into the January 6th attack on the Capitol, he wasn’t kidding. With the ink barely dry on the last round of subpoenas the Committee issued on Monday to Alex Jones, Roger Stone, and three others connected to the rally that preceded the Capitol riot, the new recipients all are part of the extreme right-wing militia movement that has risen to more prominence in the years since Trump first took office. The Committee is demanding information from those groups regarding their involvement in violence both leading up to and on January 6th, as well as testimony and records from those individuals who may have information about the attack.

The Committee issued subpoenas to Proud Boys International LLC and its founder, Enrique Tarrio; the Oath Keepers and its “President,” Elmer Stewart Rhodes; and Robert Patrick Lewis, along with his militia group, 1st Amendment Praetorian.

The “Oath Keepers” are a national, ultra-rightwing “Patriot” group comprised of former and active military, police and public safety personnel who have taken an oath to “uphold the Constitution” and to refuse to follow orders that they decide are unconstitutional. At least 34 people affiliated with the Proud Boys have been indicted by the Justice Department in connection with the riot.

Chairman Thompson issued the following statement:

“The Select Committee is seeking information from individuals and organizations reportedly involved with planning the attack, with the violent mob that stormed the Capitol on January 6th, or with efforts to overturn the results of the election. We believe the individuals and organizations we subpoenaed today have relevant information about how violence erupted at the Capitol and the preparation leading up to this violent attack. The Select Committee is moving swiftly to uncover the facts of what happened on that day and we expect every witness to comply with the law and cooperate so we can get answers to the American people.”
