The second impeachment trial of Donald Trump was officially set into motion on Monday night as Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s handpicked House Managers across the Capitol to the Senate and delivered the lone Article of Impeachment to Senate President Patrick Leahy.
The Senate Jurors will officially be sworn in on Tuesday, and although the House Impeachment Managers are ready to begin, the opening statements won’t be given until February 9th, in agreement with McConnell’s ask for an extension in the process.
The lone Article of Impeachment for Incitement of Insurrection was read in full into the record by the Lead Impeachment Manager, Representative Jamie Raskin. The Article includes a description of the January 6th events at the Capitol, beginning with Trump’s remarks at the Save America Rally that preceded the attack and resulted in the deaths of five people, including a Capitol police officer. It also includes Trump’s attempts to overturn election results in Georgia.
