BREAKING: Donald Trump Just Said That The True Victim of COVID-19 Is His Reelection Bid
At a campaign rally in Winston-Salem, North Carolina Tuesday night, President Donald Trump bemoaned the coronavirus pandemic for the devastating toll it has wrought, but he was not referring to the 190,000 American lives the pathogen has snuffed out under his watch.
The real victim, the president groused, is Donald Trump. The culprit? China, which he insisted sent COVID-19 to destroy him.
“How are we doing with China? We just have the plague,” Trump said. “We’ve had other plagues sent by them. I wonder if they did it on purpose. What do you think?”
First off, the Centers for Disease Control, citing numerous studies dating back to April, concluded that while the coronavirus had originated in China, the massive initial outbreak in New York City was actually imported from in Europe, in part because travel to and from China had already been restricted – by Trump – in February.
“To limit SARS-CoV-2 introduction, the United States restricted travel from China on February 2 and from Europe on March 13, 2020. By March 15, community transmission was widespread in New York City (NYC),” the CDC wrote in a comprehensive report in July.
“The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene conducted sentinel surveillance of influenza-like symptoms (ILS) and genetic sequencing to characterize community transmission and determine the geographic origin of SARS-CoV-2 infections,” the CDC found. “Among 544 specimens tested from persons with ILS and negative influenza test results, 36 (6.6%) were positive. Genetically sequenced positive specimens most closely resembled sequences circulating in Europe.”
Second, Trump did not specify which “other plagues” China allegedly dumped on the United States.
There was the H1N1 “Swine Flu” outbreak from 2009-2010, which originated in Mexico and killed 93 Americans, but that was contained by President Barack Obama’s well-executed pandemic preparedness program.
There was also a case of Ebola in 2014, but that was eliminated entirely in the United States, but it originated in Africa.
Facts have not stifled Trump’s racist tropes, however. If anything, they have only gotten worse and uttered more frequently.
Trump has refused to cease referring to COVID-19 as the “China Virus” and the “Kung Flu,” including in his speech Tuesday night.
Depsite being handed a pandemic playbook with a proven successful track record, Trump decided to draft a new “Pandemic Influenza Plan” after taking office in 2017. Instead of following it, Trump’s official response at the get-go was calling the pandemic a hoax, touting dangerous and ineffective treatments, encouraging people to inject household chemicals, and promising that only 15 people would die.
Trump also claimed that prior to the pandemic, which no one could have seen coming even though his administration had two response plans at its disposal, Americans were, in general, getting along.
“We were so successful before the plague came in from China that we were starting to get together,” he said. “People forget, success brings people together.”
“This was an unforeseen event,” Trump said. “A terrible event. A horrible event. So many people died. Nobody should have died. Not one person.”
But for Trump, had it not been for COVID-19 and China’s plot to ruin him, he would be “sailing” to reelection.
“I’ve got to tell you, I was sailing to an easy election. This was going to be so easy,” Trump continued. “I probably would’ve not been here tonight. I would’ve said, ‘No we don’t have to bother.’ Now we have to work against a guy that doesn’t know where he is. I can’t believe it.”
You can watch Trump’s entire cocophonous speech below, which was attended by a few hundred people and even fewer wearing masks. The song choice for Trump’s departure was The Village People’s “YMCA.” Enjoy.
