Black Democrat Says Black Woman Supreme Court Justice More Important Than Black Woman VP
House Majority Whip James Clyburn made an appearance on News Hour at PBS where his explained his view that having a black woman on the Supreme Court was a bigger priority than having a black woman run as Joe Biden’s VP. Clyburn said, “The V.P. is good on style, but, on substance, give me an African American woman on the Supreme Court.” He added, “That’s where we determine how our democracy will be preserved.”
Clyburn, who represents South Carolina made it clear that a black woman VP would be a major accomplishment, but it was not necessary in his eyes. He also believes that Democrats are making a mistake by concentrating so much on the VP spot, especially, since the position does not grant much power. He continued, “I long for an African American woman to sit on the United States Supreme Court. It’s a shame that we have had three women to sit on the United States Supreme Court, and no one has ever given the kind of consideration that is due to an African American woman.”
One of the main things motivating Clyburn’s viewpoint is the 2013 Supreme Court ruling that gutted the Voting Rights Act of 1965 by giving several states in the south the ability to change rules regarding elections without consulting the federal government. Clyburn added, “This Supreme Court has neutered the Voting Rights Act of 1965. And so, I am very concerned about the composition of the United States Supreme Court.”
The ruling left a bad taste in the mouths of many, including, former President Barack Obama, who was “deeply disappointed.” In the eyes of many, the ruling permitted the act of voter suppression.
