Biden Pledges to Make a Woman his Running Mate
With the United States in turmoil over COVID-19, it was easy to forget there was a Democratic debate last night. This debate was much smaller than the previous ones as only Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders participated.
During the back and forth between the Vermont senator and former Vice President, the topic of potential running mates came up. While he did not mention any particular names, Biden pledged that we would chose a female as his running mate.
The former Delaware lawmaker told debate moderator Dana Bash, “If I’m elected president, my cabinet, my administration will look like the country. And I commit that I will, in fact, appoint a woman to be vice president. There are a number of women qualified to be president tomorrow. I would pick a woman to be my vice president.”
While Sanders didn’t make the same kind of commitment, he also said it’s likely he would select a female. “In all likelihood, I will,” Sanders said during the debate. “For me, it’s not just nominating a woman. It is making sure that we have a progressive woman and there are progress women out there.”
This idea of connecting with a strong female candidate has reportedly been on Biden’s mind for some time. In March of 2019, the former Vice President was rumored to be courting former Georgia Gubernatorial hopeful Stacey Abrams.
