There has been a persistent narrative that there is a divide in the Democratic party between young progressives and senior lawmakers. Following Donald Trump disparaging remarks about a group of young democrats, however, a number of senior democrats have rushed to their defense. Speaker Nancy Pelosi was quick to defend the Squad after their disagreement led to Trump’s comments.
Presidential candidates will also be motivated to slam Trump for the comments. Appearing on MSNBC, Joe Biden did just that. The former Vice President told Joe Scarborough that not only were the comments abhorrent, but that he is also a big fan of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
According to Biden, the tweets were, “not only shameful, but it’s incredibly damaging.” The candidate continued, “We have led the world by the power of our example, and what presidents say, they’re the face of America, like it or not. The idea that Trump says and does the things he does is despicable.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Biden have had their disagreements in the past. Biden has claimed that going as far left as Ocasio-Cortez has may not be best strategy in attempting to take out Trump. At one point in July, AOC said that Biden would not be a “pragmatic choice” to lead to Democrats.
In this mornings interview, though, Biden specifically singled out the New York Congresswoman for praise. “I think the freshmen, particularly AOC, is smart as hell,” Biden said. She is “really a value added to the party in terms of her pushing the edges.”
