President Trump’s Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, is failing to take control of the department she was hired to operate. Washington insiders are reporting that Trump may soon cut DeVos lose because nobody is taking her seriously.
POLITICO says behind scenes breakdowns have left DeVos’ department in shambles and many insiders expect her to step down in the near future.
Thomas Toch, the director at Georgetown University’s FutureEd think tank tells POLITICO:
“She can talk about bureaucracy and how constraining it is for her, but a Republican-controlled Congress rejected her budget proposals. She can’t fill her senior staff slots. Morale is terrible at the department.
Toch says the conversation in Washington education circles is already being directed toward post-DeVos talks. “I don’t think it would be a bad thing if she left. I think she’s been probably one of the most ineffective people to ever hold the job,” he said.
It’s public knowledge that DeVos’ attempts to funnel money into her “school-choice” voucher programs was a failure after Republicans in Congress refused to back the move. DeVos previously made the cringe-worthy promise to remake the American education system into “God’s kingdom.”
DeVos, a billionaire, has been one of Donald Trump’s most high-profile appointments. With so many unfilled spots in his administration, her resignation and ineffective leadership is a blow the Trump administration can’t afford.
