Ted Cruz has huge political aspirations and hopes to be president one day. But he’s spent the first 3 months of 2021 continuously embarrassing himself. There was his support for Donald Trump’s big lie that resulted in an insurrection. Then Cruz fled his home state of Texas during a weather crisis to go on a tropical vacation. And this week, the Texas senator posted a widely mocked video of himself at the border, claiming he was in severe danger. His last senate opponent Beto O’Rourke savagely mocked Cruz, claiming he was never in danger at all.
Cruz claimed in his Twitter post, “That’s Mexico, and you can see there are three smugglers right there, standing on the Mexico side, looking at us. They’ve been shining their flashlights at us, they’re yelling at us.”
O’Rourke responded, “You’re in a Border Patrol boat armed with machine guns. The only threat you face is unarmed children and families who are seeking asylum (as well as the occasional heckler). If you’re looking for a crisis to cosplay Senator for, I’m happy to point you in the right direction.”
The Texas Democrat later continued, “The truth is, the number of individual asylum seekers and immigrants seeking to come to this country is the SAME or LOWER than it was in 2019 when Trump was President (and you were, apparently, Senator). This isn’t any more of a crisis today than it was then.”
